A simple analogy:

  • First generation (IVF) : Let sperm and egg “fall in love” freely in a culture dish – natural fertilisation.

  • Second generation (ICSI) : Our embryologists select a single high‑quality sperm and perform an “arranged marriage” – injecting it directly into the egg to achieve fertilisation.

  • Third generation (PGT) : Before embryo transfer, we conduct a “genetic health check‑up” on the embryo, screening for normal chromosomes or specific gene mutations, and then transfer only healthy embryos.

2. Second‑Generation IVF (ICSI): Precision Solution for Male Infertility

The formal name of second‑generation IVF is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) . Using high‑precision micromanipulation equipment, our experienced embryologists select a single morphologically and functionally normal sperm and inject it directly into the egg’s cytoplasm, thus achieving fertilisation. This technique bypasses the sperm’s natural ability to penetrate the egg, effectively overcoming fertilisation barriers.

Primary indications include:

  • Severe oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, or teratozoospermia.

  • Obstructive azoospermia (sperm can be retrieved by testicular or epididymal aspiration).

  • Previous IVF cycles with fertilisation failure or very low fertilisation rates.

  • Immunological infertility or other special conditions.

3. Third‑Generation IVF (PGT): Achieving “Better Babies” at the Start of Life

The formal name of third‑generation IVF is Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) . It builds on second‑generation technology by adding a genetic screening step. In our state‑of‑the‑art laboratory, we biopsy a few cells from embryos that have developed to the blastocyst stage, then perform genetic analysis to select embryos that are free from disease‑causing mutations and have normal chromosome numbers. This can fundamentally reduce the risk of miscarriage and prevent inherited disorders from being passed to future generations.

Based on different testing objectives, PGT is classified into three main types:

① PGT‑A (Aneuploidy Screening)

  • Detects: Whether the embryo has the correct number of chromosomes.

  • Main candidates:

    • Women aged 38 or older.

    • Couples with recurrent miscarriage (two or more consecutive losses).

    • Repeated implantation failure.

  • Goal: Select euploid (chromosomally normal) embryos to significantly improve pregnancy rates and lower miscarriage risk.

② PGT‑M (Monogenic Disease Testing)

  • Detects: Whether the embryo carries a specific monogenic genetic disorder.

  • Main candidates:

    • Couples where one or both partners carry a known monogenic disease (e.g., thalassaemia, haemophilia).

  • Goal: Completely block the transmission of monogenic diseases to offspring.

③ PGT‑SR (Structural Rearrangement Testing)

  • Detects: Chromosomal structural abnormalities such as balanced translocations or inversions.

  • Main candidates:

    • Couples where either partner carries a known chromosomal structural abnormality.

  • Goal: Select embryos with normal chromosomal architecture for transfer.
